The Gouldian Finch, endemic to Australia, is considered to be the most beautifully coloured of the Australian birds. They are small, rarely far from water, and need to drink several times during the day. The male of the species is brighter than the female, with a purple chest, whereas the female exhibits a softer pink chest. Unfortunately, the Gouldian Finch is currently on the Endangered list. Several factors including, loss of habitat due to fire, the illegal bird trade, and a vulnerability to parasites are all challenges these beautiful birds face.
